The day my son graduated from elementary school I began to realize that to avoid becoming the ultimate helicopter parent I would need another project.   I needed a job that would that would allow me to work at home and have flexible hours.  I wanted an opportunity to be creative and to help other people.

Decades ago, I was the editor of my college newspaper; later in university I studied communications and elementary education.  When I found a franchise system that published local kids guides it seemed a natural fit.  Publishing a kid’s guide let me work from home and set my own grueling but flexible hours.  I enjoyed helping the local business community spread the word about their products and helping parents find what they needed for the kids they loved.  In April 2006 Pumpkinseed Publishing Inc. was born.

Sadly, in 2009 it became apparent that the franchise system was not going to continue to exist in its established form.  I had to decide weather or not to close, disappointing the clients and parents who had come to count on my help, or to re-imagine Pumpkinseed Publishing, Inc. In the spring of 2009 we published our “Spring into Summer” guide rebranded as Mississauga Kids.  We also launched our new MississaugaKids.com website.

Today Pumpkinseed Publishing continues to grow and be successful. Our annual and seasonal guides are printed with the help of Michael and Judy at Bamboo Marketing and distributed by Canada Post.  Our print publications reach over 123,000 Mississauga homes 3 times per year.  The guides are printed in full color on 70 pound gloss paper ensuing a high quality product that parents will keep as a reference long past the actual publication date.  I am especially proud of our on time publishing record.  We have never missed or delayed a publishing date.

We continue to grow online as well.  Mississauga Kids has a popular website featuring a calendar of events, contests, a blog, and articles about what’s happening in Mississauga for kids and families. We have a Meet Up Group, and we are on Facebook and Twitter.  In 2010 Pumpkinseed Publishing launched YourFamilyDirectory.com an online directory system for family friendly businesses looking to connect with parents, kids, and families who are looking for the services and products they need.  We will also be launching MississaugaPrivateSchools.com and MissississaugaMontessoriSchools.com and other websites that will help our clients reach out to their potential customers.
